Top 10 reasons to go to the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

Can you believe the 5th Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party is next week?

Last year's event was freaking epic. Not only did we raise over $7,000 for Operation Breakthrough, but I'm 100% certain everyone had a blast (Except the mystery person who vommed on one of our Christmas tree decorations. Ish.)

The ticket price is $50 (buy them online). We recognize this time of year and with our economy being down, that may be a big expense. However, we've added a bunch of perks to this year's party that make it totally affordable.

So instead of spending the $50 you normally spend at P&L, Plaza or Brookside bars... here are the top 10 reasons you should come to the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.

10. OPEN BAR - This year you get FREE beer and wells all night long. Not only that, Tito's Vodka is offering premium drinks for $1 and sponsoring beverages all night for VIP ticket holders. This means your chances of seeing my mom drunk again increase by 500% (stop denying it, Mom. Embrace it!)

9. TWO BANDS - Dolewite is going to rock the main stage with your favorite hip hop from the 80s, 90s and 00s... but we've added The B'Dinas to the VIP pre-party. Check out their stuff here.

8. VITAMIN WATER - One of our raffle prizes is a year's supply of Vitamin Water. This gives you the chance to talk like Bear Grylls all night by saying vih-ta-mins and glah-see-her. Example: Tito's Vodka contains a lot of vih-ta-mins.

7. ICE LUGE + ICE SCULPTURE - We have our OWN glah-see-hers! And this year I promise the ice luge will be more sanitary. Swine Flu is not included.

6. RUN DMC - Remember last year when the guy dressed as Santa got sh*t-wrecked and sang Christmas in Hollis with Dolewite? Me neither. But isn't that the point?

5. EVERYONE LOOKS STUPID - If you're too embarrassed to go out in public wearing a wonky sweater, don't fret. Someone will look more foolish than you. Promise.

4. BAGS FLY FREE - Southwest Airlines has donated SIX tickets to our raffle/silent auction. Just when you wanted to escape the manic weather of Kansas City... here's your chance.

3. EXPENSIVE DECORATIONS - Fake snow. Plastic Christmas trees. Red and green lights. Elves. This kind of ambiance will get your a** in the holiday spirit in no time.

2. HONOR THE 80s - Among the awesome concert tickets we've scored for the auction, we have two Founders Club tickets to see Bon Jovi at the Sprint Center. If you lose the auction, my brother and I will gladly perform Wanted Dead or Alive on Rock Band for you.

1. HELP YOUR COMMUNITY - All of the money raised by this fundraiser stays in Kansas City to help local families. Operation Breakthrough is one of the best organizations I've dealt with, and I'm extremely excited to be helping a fantastic group of people improve our community.

FIFA is about to make their selection for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and Kansas City is one of the leaders to be a host city in the bid to bring the event to the U.S.

For those of you still ignoring learning about soccer, the FIFA World Cup is by far the world's largest and sporting event. There are a lot of statistics about the millions and billions of dollars generated for host cities and spent by traveling fans (and fans DO travel for the World Cup), but in reality it's a month-long par-tay.The last time the event was in the U.S. was 1994, which was the highest attended and most profitable cup in history.

This is basically how it works: Kansas City would be one of a pool of 18 host cities where matches would be held. Arrowhead is obviously the game site. Teams would live and train in a series of satellite locations (Lawrence, Overland Park, St. Joseph, etc.) before games to adjust to the summer heat and time zone. Over a period of few weeks, the region could see $500 million pumped into the economy and thousands of new jobs.

So you can read the extreme details yourself, below are links to download the Kansas City proposal, the ERA final report (think overall logistics for the U.S.), the Addendum (event location logistics), the official press release. Below I've embedded the presentation that David Ficklin from OnGoal gave to a group media and blog types at the Wizard's facility:

I was initially pretty skeptical of Kansas City having a shot, because of all the usual reasons (hotel space, transportation, security, regional un-sexiness). But the organizers make a pretty good case. Here is why I can get behind this.

  • Funding to make it happen is raised privately through sponsorships. Think a $10 million investment (at no cost to tax payers) for a $500 million payoff for the local and regional economy.
  • The satellite locations would ease the pressure of having enough hotel space for fans, and benefit the MoKan region - not just Kansas City proper.
  • FIFA + the local committee would be responsible for organizing transportation for fans. We're not banking on light rail or entirely on the KCMO government.
  • Security, similar to the Olympics, would take years of planning and be a joint effort with FIFA and all levels of government.
  • The public "fan fest" events are all FREE
  • Some KC landmarks would see hot action (Volker Park, Liberty Memorial, Sprint Center, Union Station, Kauffman Center and Bartle Hall)

Let's be realistic. The 2018 bid will probably see the World Cup back in Europe... but we have a solid chance at landing 2022.

This could be the kind of thing that changes the face of our region for years. Our soccer community is passionate, and we have a great MLS franchise. The Wizards are actually the most successful KC sports team in recent history.

The final pool of 18 host cities will be chosen in December 2009. That's NEXT WEEK! You can keep Kansas City in the running by signing the online petition at www.goUSAbid.com/kc.

As of last week, we were in sixth place out of 27 cities. KC is even beating ginormous metro areas like Miami, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and D.C. We're even way ahead of regional competitors Denver and St. Louis.

It's a 30-second investment for a potential couple of decades of payoff.

SMCKC November Breakfast

Simon Kuo took some really nice photos from this month's Social Media Club of Kansas City breakfast. Thank you, Simon!

Also, Kurt Kloeblen from KCTV5 put together a nice segment on our recent executive board elections. Watch it.

Suburban Newspapers of America Conference

This week I'm attending the SNA conference at the Intercontinental in Kansas City. I have mixed feelings about it, because there is an awful lot of denial going on about the state of the newspaper industry. There was actually a guy on a panel today who didn't understand how organic search worked. Yikes.

Anyway, it just reaffirms my happy feelings about working for the Lawrence Journal-World. There is obviously a lot of growth that needs to happen industry wide, and I'm discovering what I already knew - that we're ahead of the game, or at least have a clear vision for the future.

Here are some photos I took on Tuesday and a video interview with conference attendee Chris Krug.

Beckham comes to Kansas City

Last fall I did a video blog at the Wizards playoff game vs. the Crew. A few months ago, the Wizards contacted me and asked if I'd like to come to a game or two this summer and do the same thing.

The provided me with a press pass, which gave me access to the field level and press box, for Saturday's game against the L.A. Galaxy (hello, David Beckham).

Jake and I went and had a lot of fun watching the game from different parts of Community America Ballpark.

Full disclosure: the only thing I received from the Wizards was a press pass. I paid for all of my beverages and was even hassled - quite a bit, actually - by security (even though I followed all of the "rules" perfectly).

There were some other local bloggers there for the same purpose (make sure you check out my good buddy Ramsey's stuff). It's good to see a pro sports franchise embracing the power of blogging, even though my experience wasn't all rainbows and unicorns. It's definitely a step in the right direction.

This video is also on YouTube.
